We are delighted to share that our Year 3 students recently enjoyed an enriching visit to the Leicester Botanical Gardens, designed to consolidate their learning on the science of plants. The day was filled with engaging, hands-on activities that brought their classroom studies to life.
The children embarked on a journey through the diverse plant collections, including explorations of the tropical and desert greenhouses. These immersive environments allowed them to observe firsthand the unique adaptations of plants from various climates, deepening their understanding of plant diversity and survival strategies.
Throughout the gardens, students participated in interactive activities such as bark and leaf rubbings, which enhanced their observational skills and appreciation for the textures and patterns in nature. They also engaged in a sensory exercise, matching different herbs to everyday products like shower gels and toothpaste, highlighting the practical applications of plants in our daily lives.
A highlight of the trip was the opportunity for each child to plant their own cress seeds. This hands-on experience not only reinforced their knowledge of plant growth requirements but also instilled a sense of responsibility and excitement as they anticipate observing the germination process in the coming days.
The Leicester Botanical Gardens staff, experienced in working with children, facilitated these educational activities, ensuring a balance of learning and fun. Their expertise greatly contributed to making the day a memorable and impactful experience for all students.
We encourage you to ask your children about their favourite parts of the trip and to continue exploring the fascinating world of plants together at home.
